The Cuban Research Institute, the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, and the Libraries at Florida International University announced the winners of the 2023 Díaz-Ayala Library Travel Grant competition. The awards are offered in honour of Cristóbal Díaz-Ayala, the esteemed music collector and scholar who donated his Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection to FIU in 2001.
My topic, "The Ajiaco of Mambo: Transnational Pathways in the Mexico City Mambo Bands of Dámaso Pérez Prado" was selected. In May 2023, I spent a week working in the archives at the Díaz-Ayala and presented a lecture on the time that Pérez Prado spent living and working in Mexico City.
